Vale Professor Graeme Hugo

“It is with great sadness that SSI heard of Professor Graeme Hugo’s passing after a short illness. Professor Hugo was a distinguished demographer and a person whose work highlighted the strengths and value that migration contributed to Australia. He leaves an outstanding legacy,” Ms Roumeliotis said.

Professor Hugo’s research had particular relevance to the work of SSI, as it developed valuable insights in to migration and the issues that affect populations.

Professor Hugo was named an Officer of the Order of Australia for his services to population research in 2012. He published around 400 articles and chapters in academic journals and books, as well as many conference papers. Professor Hugo is also noted as supervisor of more than 50 PhD theses.

The esteemed academic’s professional appointments included Professor of Geography and Director of the Australian Population and Migration Research Centre at Adelaide University, and Australian Research Council Australian Professorial Fellow.

Tributes from his colleagues and politicians have praised Professor Hugo as one of Australia’s “great public intellectuals” who was noted for the generosity of his knowledge.
