Discounted groceries help make a merrier Christmas

Visit The Staples Bag website.

Christmas pudding, ham on the bone, turkey and ice cream are some of the delicious contents of the Christmas Staples Bag, available for sale in Campsie or on-line. Recipes for cooking the ham and turkey, and all the ingredients required are also included.

Food insecurity is a growing concern for many in the community who are struggling with the rising costs of living.

For just $20, a standard Staples Bag includes around $60 worth of nutritious and essential food items such as milk, bread, cereals, assorted pantry staples, frozen goods, personal items, seasonal vegetables, meat, poultry, seafood and fruit.

For $45, The Christmas Staples Bag will be available from Monday December 14, and will include a ham on the bone, turkey, fruit mince pies, Christmas pudding, gingerbread men as well as the standard Staples Bag items.

The benefits of the food supply packages are two-fold, with the Staples Bags also providing a number of opportunities for job seekers to gain practical work skills in warehousing and retail operations.

Developed as an outcome of the CoAct/SSI Work for the Dole program, the Staples Bag provides job seekers with tangible skills in a range of areas including logo and website design, packaging and warehouse maintenance, customer service and direct marketing.

The Christmas Staples Bag is also a cross collaboration with jobactive Community Kitchen, another Work For the Dole program, in which participants make the fruit mince pies and gingerbread men.

SSI Manager of Employment Services Terry Wilson said the food packages were a prime example of how SSI’s holistic approach to developing Work for the Dole programs was producing tangible outcomes.

“The Staples Bag is one of three Work for the Dole initiatives where job seekers can help in the creation of a product that can be marketed, while gaining valuable experience, skills and training along the way,” Mr Wilson said.

“And the fruit mince pies are some of the tastiest I’ve ever eaten.”

The family Staples Bag ($30) contains up to $80 worth of grocery items and can feed three to four people for up to one week. There is also a Vegetarian Bag ($15).

The bags can be purchased from 449 Canterbury Road, Campsie between 9am-5pm or pre-ordered on line at

The Staples Bag would also make a generous gift for someone you know experiencing financial hardship.

As a member of CoAct, SSI also delivers the Australian Government’s jobactive service.
