SSI staff and asylum seeker clients took part in the OzHarvest CEO CookOff, in March. The CookOff is an annual event that brings together celebrity chefs, CEOs and vulnerable Australians to put the spotlight on issues of food security, homelessness and challenges faced by youth in crisis. It’s also a fund-raiser for OzHarvest.

SSI’s participation in the event stems from the support OzHarvest provides asylum seeker clients in the form of food packages, every Thursday.

CEOs were grouped into teams and paired with celebrity chefs, including Matt Moran, Maggie Beer, Karen Martini, Miguel Maestre and Colin Fassnidge, to prepare a meal to serve to and enjoy with the guests.

“It was a fantastic night, everyone enjoyed it,” said SSI staff member Lynette Racheti, who is involved with distributing OzHarvest food to clients. “I enjoyed the music, the dancing, and the food, of course – it was top-notch. I also enjoyed seeing our clients enjoy the whole thing. They’d never seen anything like it so it gave them a real thrill.”

The participating CEOs have helped raise a total of $942,855.50 so far, which will go towards further OzHarvest food deliveries for people in need like our clients.

SSI Volunteer Spotlight: Sue Vile

A retired school teacher and nurse, Sue has dedicated an enormous amount of her time in recent years on the front line of humanitarian services, helping refugees at many stages of their journey to safety.
