LEANNE HUNG, The Staples Bag Project Coordinator: The Staples Bag is a community food project run by non-profit organisation called Settlement Services International.

We exist to help those in need to access more affordable and nutritious food staples.

The Staples Bag is here to address this growing issue of food security in a wider community.

We have a food store located in Campsie that operates operates between 9:30 and 4:30 on weekdays and Saturdays 10:00 to 1:00.

There's plenty of parking on site and it also easily accessible using public transport.

We also have about 15 pop-ups that we run in the Sydney Metro area, that we do in social housing states and in partnership with other community organisations just to help those in need to access more affordable food.

We've got three primary bags. We've got our standard bag, which contains up to $70 worth of groceries for only $20 and that's enough to feed one to two people for about a week.

For an extra $10 you can get double the amount of groceries; for only $30 in our family bag and that's enough to feed three to four people for a week and we even got a vegetarian bag, which contains about $45 to $50 worth of groceries for only $15.

[Interview with a Staples Bag shopper]

DAWN, from Georges Hall, NSW: Ingredients here are cheap, groceries are much cheaper than what I can buy elsewhere.

It helps my budget given that I'm on a disability pension.

I've got a 15 year old son, so I can get the things that he likes at a much cheaper price.

It's a great place to come to, and I know that also help the community, which is also good thing.

[Second interview with Staples Bag shopper]

MARY, from Croydon Park, NSW: I've been coming to The Staples Bag for about three months and I told a lot of friends about it, and I even brought friends over.

LEANNE HUNG, The Staples Bag Project Coordinator: We have an extensive range of items available. We have over 300 unique items; everything from fresh bread, milk, cereal, free range eggs, fresh fruit and vegetables - most of which comes directly from the markets - frozen meat and seafood.

We also have our own range of ‘heat and eat’ frozen meals that are prepared by qualified chefs.

We've got a whole wide range of pantry staples and even household items, as well.

Anyone who feels that they're doing it tough or struggling to put food on the table are welcome to shop here at The Staples Bag.

There is no strict eligibility criteria, people are able to remain anonymous because we do understand how important it is for people to retain the dignity in difficult times.

The participants here who also come here for work experience are also able to gain skills in merchandising, warehousing, customer service and data entry that would also improve their prospects of finding employment.

We are always looking to try to build relationships with suppliers and donors to see what kind of produce and products are we able to stock to be able to provide a really comprehensive grocery service.

And when customers come in there's always someone to greet them and to offer their help to help them pack their staples bag.

The Staples Bag has had such a positive impact in the local community; for people who are struggling to make ends meet it's such a relief for them to know that they're able to afford basic and nutritious food staples.
