Social Sector Transformation Fund a boon for vulnerable people in NSW

Settlement Services International (SSI) has welcomed the NSW Government’s $50 million boost for charities and not-for-profits rocked by the COVID -19 pandemic.

The Social Sector Transformation Fund will provide social sector organisations grants to adapt and modernise their operations, with a focus on capacity building, better digital service delivery, remote working capabilities and improving business strategies, so they remain efficient, effective and viable.

“The pandemic has taken a toll on everyone, including the not-for-profits providing emergency shelter, child and family services, food for those in financial distress, and other life-saving programs,” said SSI CEO Violet Roumeliotis.

“They play a hugely important role in the lives of vulnerable people throughout NSW but they have been struggling to cope with increased demand, reduced donations and the cost of delivering COVID safe services.

“This announcement will allow organisations to adapt and modernise operations to keep up with demand.”

She said, “With this fund the NSW Government is acknowledging the important role the community sector plays in civil society and the impact COVID-19 has had on our workforces and the people we serve.”

The announcement follows sustained advocacy efforts from SSI, NCOSS and other peak organisations, and the release of modelling showing the sector is facing increased demand.

NCOSS CEO Joanna Quilty said, “We have argued that it is vitally important that governments step up and help the frontline workers and organisations who help so many during times of crisis, and the NSW Government has acted.”

Ms Roumeliotis joined Ms Quilty in thanking Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Gareth Ward and Treasurer Dominic Perrottet for delivering the vital support.
