Australia is multicultural

Multiculturalism is more than Australia’s history. It is our future.
Multiculturalism is central to who we are, how we prosper and how the world sees us. More than half of Australians are first- or second-generation migrants. Across generations, people from different cultures have built businesses, strengthened communities, raised families and helped shape modern Australia.
Australia is multicultural
There are almost 28 million of us, each with a story worth hearing. Together, these stories shape who we are as Australians and remind us that everyone has an equal place in our shared future. This campaign invites us to listen with curiosity, find common ground and strengthen belonging.
What I love about Australia is that people from all over the world can build a life together here. We come from different cultures, but we share the same values.

Pull up a chair
The camp chair in the video is a simple symbol of making room for one another. It reminds us to be curious, listen openly and find connection and common ground across difference.
Share your story and invite someone else to share theirs. Ask what Australia means to them, what has shaped them and what they hope for our future.
That’s how we build common ground and belonging. One conversation at a time.
“After being forced to flee Ukraine, I found a country where diversity is celebrated and every culture, story and tradition adds something valuable to our shared future. In Australia, I get invited to four different Nowruz celebrations by different communities; it’s wonderful.”

“I was born and raised in Iraq, but Australia adopted me. As a young refugee, I never felt like I had to fit in because everyone here brings a different story. It gave me opportunities I never imagined and a place where I truly belong.”

Beyond politics: a National Migration Summit
An alliance of business and civil society organisations is calling on the Prime Minister to convene a National Migration Summit this year to move the migration debate beyond short-term politics towards a long-term plan for Australia’s future.
Migration is too important for reactive policymaking or political bidding wars. Australia needs an open, constructive forum that brings together all levels of government, business, unions, communities, settlement organisations and experts.
The summit would confront legitimate concerns about housing, infrastructure, public services and cost of living, while developing a transparent, evidence-based roadmap for migration. Fixing this starts with a national conversation.
