Raising Children in a New Country (RCNC)

Raising children is a challenge for everyone but raising them in a new country presents new challenges. Are you interested to learn how to strengthen the wellbeing and relationships with your children and family members in a new environment? Are you interested in learning more about the support available?

In this free group program, you will learn about Australian laws and norms relating to children and family through weekly group sessions. The parenting groups available are:

  • Tamil men’s group
  • Tamil women’s group
  • Arabic men’s group
  • Arabic women’s group

You will gain a better understanding about child development at different stages, communication and discipline, the child protection system in Australia, and the education system.

This is a private, confidential program, run by Tamil and Arabic-speaking facilitators.     

Who is it for?

This program is for:

  • Tamil and Arabic- speaking parents.
  • This is a voluntary program for men and women who have come to Australia from overseas.
  • Men and women who are interested in learning about raising children in Australia and the support available.

What will it be like?

Parenting in a new country presents some extra unique challenges which this group program will cover. The purpose of this group is to learn and grow together, and also to meet with others facing similar challenges to support one another.

The group facilitators help to run the sessions at a comfortable pace. The group facilitators would provide information, create discussion, and allow for self-reflection. You will experience a positive approach that would support the understanding of the well-being of your family which can help you to be more confident in raising your children in a new country.

 Key outcomes

  • Learn more about Australian laws and norms relating to children and family.
  • Share and discuss cultural ways of raising children with respective background parents (Arab/Tami).
  • Know more about the support available for children and families in Australia.

Raising Children in a New Country (RCNC) is a group program that helps you to strengthen the wellbeing and relationships with your children and family members in a new environment through weekly group sessions conducted for both Tamil and Arabic-speaking men and women separately.
